Palm Jumeirah beaches at a glance

There is no single public beach that covers the whole island. The best-known beach destination is Palm West Beach, which many people call West Beach. These are two names for the same place. Its operator lists swimming, a promenade, restaurants and separate club venues.

Do not read that list as free sun loungers, free pool use or free beach access for everyone. Each club and hotel sets its own rules. If you prefer to see the beaches from the water, the yacht tours around the Palm give you the view of the shoreline without a beach booking.

Our pick: a day at a hotel pool and beach

If you do not stay on the Palm, this day access gives you a hotel's pool and beach for a day, with towels, seating and a steam room and sauna.

Where you can swim or relax on the Palm

The options differ in access and cost. Entry prices and minimum spend vary by venue.

For most visitors who want a swim and a walk, the West Beach promenade is the place to start. For a full day with loungers, reserve a beach club or stay at a hotel with its own beach. Ask before you go what entry and minimum spend apply, because these differ by venue.

Beach clubs and hotel beaches

Beach clubs are restaurant, pool and beach venues inside the West Beach offer. They take their own reservations. Entry prices, minimum spend, age limits and closing days differ by venue, so ask when you reserve.

Hotels with a beach usually keep it for guests. One example is the Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah on Palm West Beach, with a private beach and a pool. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out at noon. Whether non-guests can use the beach is a question for the hotel. Atlantis lists kayaking and stand-up paddling as non-motorized water sports. Ask the resort for prices and availability.

Swim safely

The Gulf looks calm, but currents can catch even good swimmers.

Swim only in supervised zones

Use designated, supervised swimming areas and respect red flags. Do not swim from the breakwater or in boat channels.

No night swimming on the Palm

The municipality's night swimming beaches are at Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim 1. Palm West Beach is not one of them, so do not plan an evening swim on the island.

Lifeguard hours and water quality

Lifeguard hours, parking fees and water quality notices change. Ask at the venue on the day, and follow the flags and signs.

Local rules in short

Wear modest clothes in public areas and swimwear at the beach or pool. Do not photograph people without their permission. The legal drinking age in Dubai is 21, and alcohol is available in licensed venues. A beach club booking is not permission to drink on the promenade or on a yacht. House rules at each venue apply on top.

You can also see the Palm from a beach in Dubai Marina. The Dubai Marina guide covers that side of the water.

Palm Jumeirah beaches: frequently asked questions

Is there a free public beach on Palm Jumeirah?

Do not count on one. Palm West Beach offers a promenade and swimming, but clubs and hotels run their own areas with their own rules. Check the rules on site before you lay out a towel.

Are West Beach and Palm West Beach different places?

No. They are two names for the same destination.

Is Al Ittihad Park a beach?

No. It is a green space with a 3.2 km running track and more than 100 local plant and tree species.

Can I swim at night?

Not on the Palm. The municipal night swimming beaches are at Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim 1.

Can I drink alcohol on the beach?

The minimum age is 21, and alcohol is for licensed venues. A booking at a beach club does not allow drinking on the promenade or on a boat.

What should I wear?

Swimwear at the beach and pool, and modest clothes in public areas around them.
